Working as part of the Heritage Visualisation Team, I project managed the design and installation of a bilingual family trail at the World Heritage Site of Ҫatalhöyük in Turkey.

This neolithic settlement is an awe-inspiring site, but difficult for the average visitor to interpret, in part due to it being a working archaeological dig. This also created challenges for the interpretation panels as the site is in a state of constant flux.

The family trail used a non-gendered animal character to both appeal to children and to avoid the need to design a neolithic human character, which could be a highly contentious creation. Throughout the trail, the horse character asks questions, encourages critical thinking and close observation as children move around the site.

Izzy was a standout amongst my team, taking the lead in devising a new family trail to complement the existing visitor route around Ҫatalhöyük.  Working in collaboration with both Turkish and international heritage practitioners, Izzy’s vision was conceived and implemented in just two weeks.

Alongside contributing to a variety of other initiatives (including our new blog, new installations at the Visitor Centre and replica house) Izzy has had a lasting impact on the site: her family trail concept will help to structure future designs, and it has opened up our interpretation at  Ҫatalhöyük to a younger audiences worldwide.
